A profilometer is a measuring instrument used to measure a surface's profile, in order to quantify its roughness. In Contact Profilometry a diamond stylus is moved vertically in contact with a sample and then moved laterally across the sample for a specified distance and specified contact force. A profilometer can measure small surface variations in vertical stylus displacement as a function of position. A typical profilometer can measure small vertical features ranging in height from 10 nm to 1 mm. The height position of the diamond stylus generates an analog signal which is converted into a digital signal, stored, analyzed, and displayed. Advantages of contact profilometers include acceptance, surface independence, resolution, it is a direct technique with no modeling required.

The profilometers manufactured by Sharif Solar Co., known as PFM-5020 and PFM-5010 Models, are contact profilometers which are used for surface roughness, step height and layer thickness measurements. Details of technical specifications are presented in the following Table.

 

The mechanism of a profilometer is similar to the atomic force microscope (AFM); but the difference is that unlike the AFM in which the displacements along the X, Y, Z axes occur by using Piezo parts and without complexity, in the profilometer moving stage needs to be designed with more details. In addition, the Z-sensor in the AFM measures up to 10 microns, while the profilometer should be able to record in the range of several hundred microns with an accuracy in the range of nanometer.

  • The device should be repaired by a skilled expert.
  • The device should be operated by an expert and trained operator.
  • Avoid moving the device during the measurement.
  • For maximum thermal stability, do not remove the device body cover.
  • Install the device in a place with no vibration.
  • When the stylus is touching the sample surface, do not move the stages manually and use only auto modes.
  • There is a risk of damage to the device as a result of high impact and humidity.
