There are two common methods to get final products from the molten glass. Float glass process to produce glass sheets like those used in windows and glass blowing to produce bottles and jars. Nowadays, glass bottles and jars are produced by two different methods; press and blow, blow and blow. In the blow and blow process the glass is first blown through a valve in the baffle. The compressed air is blown through the glass, which results in hollow and partly formed container. Compressed air is then blown again at the second stage to give final shape. In fact, by air blowing, the glass is expanded into the mold shape. In the press and blow process, the glass is compressed to the initial mold shape by a piston. This process continues with the same stages as the blow and blow process. In order to improve the properties of glass forming molds, increase efficiency and life time, use of hard and wear resistant coatings are necessary. The hard coatings are used to protect molds against direct contact of glass with the mold, abrasion, corrosion and fatigue at high temperature. These molds are usually made of inexpensive cast iron and low carbon steels. The coatings are nitrides, oxides and nitrides of elements such as Al, Cr and Ti. For instance, TiSiN, TiAlN, TiCrN and TiN are some of these coatings. Nanostructured coatings can improve the expected properties.
