High degree of activation is obtained by Plasma Processing due to the formation of functional groups on the surface of textiles and textile surface roughness. Polyester is a category of polymers that contain the ester functional group in their main chain. Polyester fibers have high tenacity, low water absorption and minimal shrinkage in comparison with other industrial fibers. This material is used very widely in clothing. An important difference between polymers and other engineering solids is the characteristic low surface energy of polymers and their resulting intrinsically poor adhesion. Since adhesion is fundamentally a surface property, often governed by a layer of molecular dimensions, it is possible to modify this near-surface region without affecting the desirable bulk properties of the material. Traditional methods of surface treatment are mostly chemical processes but an important new one to modify the fiber surface, to increase the uptake of dyes and finishes or to impart unique functionality, is performed through cold plasma. Plasma includes less water usage and energy consumption, with very small fiber damage. It is used to enhance the quality of textile products in fabric preparation and in dyeing and finishing methods.

This product is polyester fabric modified by cold plasma method. It shows a 3.5 nm increase in its surface roughness. By adding plasma, coloration properties of the product improve while its wash and light fastness remain stable.
Nano-scale roughness on the surface of polymeric fibers causes an increase in paint adhesion on the surface. If a surface is rough the adhesive can penetrate into the pores and then lock mechanically to the surface.
This product should be dyed at most one month after applying the plasma.
