Production of Gold Nanoparticles-Based Aptasensors to Detect Drugs

Nowadays, there are numerous methods to detect chemicals and toxic materials such as drugs, among which mention can be made of high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and electrophoresis capillary. These analytical methods are usually costly and time-consuming, and some of them require expert operators.
Application of aptameric sensors is among the new detection methods in the recent years. Aptamers are single-chain oligonucleotide ligands. Aptasensors have been widely used in diagnosis methods due to advantages such as high sensitivity, ease of production and functionalization, non-toxicity, not triggering human body’s immunity system, reasonable price, and small size. Gold nanoparticles have recently been used in the production of fluorescent, dye sensing, and electrochemical aptasensors due to characteristics such as biocompatibility, conductivity, very high offset factor, chemical stability, unique optical and electrical properties, and high surface area.

The Iranian company Riz Zist Tarasheh Fanavaran has succeeded in the production of gold nanoparticles based aptasoensors in order to detect cocaine, morphine, heroine, and codeine. 

In case there are drugs in the sample, aptamer reacts with the drug and changes the color of the sample from red to purple. Gold nanoparticles have been used in this diagnosis kit at determined size and characteristics under specific circumstances.

This product issued in urban terminals, borders, and airport gates in order to detect drugs in less than five minutes. Quick detection is very important in these tests and this product is able to detect the presence of drugs in a baggage in about three minutes.

Among the advantages of the diagnosis kit, mention can be made of quick detection (less than five minutes), the lack of the need for expert staff, the lack of the need for specific facilities, simultaneous detection of four drugs (heroine, morphine, cocaine, and opium), very high selectivity and not reacting with other chemicals such as codeine, glass, methadone, tramadol, alprazolam, lorazepam, diazepam, acetaminophen, or antibiotics. 

Nanoparticles based aptasensor has been produced for the first time by taking into consideration the potential of Iranian experts based on the connection of aptamer to gold nanoparticles in comparison with the existing Iranian or foreign made samples in the market. This product is able to compete with other samples in the detection of drugs.

Aptasensor based on gold nanoparticles produced by this company has obtained NanoScale Certificate from Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council.
